When I heard about White Island the first time, I thought about something like the Whitsundays, a white beach, palmtrees, lying in the sun... But I was completly wrong. White Island is the only still aktive islandvulcano in New Zealand.
We went there by Boat and saw lots of dolphins on the way. We walked about two hours around White Isalnd itself and saw the crater, loads of yellow sulfur stuff and it was more like being on an other planet, then just two hours away from NZ, pretty amazing and even more unusual with the helmets and the masks.
At the end we could jump from the boat into the Sea before we left again to the mainland.
An other geothermal "wonder" (Wai-O-Tapu Thermal Wonderland):
